River Road : One Last Time

IMG_67721.jpg

IMG_6711 I am moving out of New York on the 31st so on Memorial Day I set out to take a one last spin through River Road in New Jersey.

IMG_6712

The best time to cross the Brooklyn Bridge is before 8 am. I asked a tourist to take this photo of me.

IMG_6720

New York in the early morning is beautiful.

IMG_6732

Notice how empty it is.

This bridge will be packed with tourists later.

And this.

IMG_6740

River Road is hard to describe. It takes an hour from Brooklyn to get there. Battling tourists, taxis and sometimes other cyclists. When you get there. It's all worth it!

IMG_6741

Hard to believe that Manhattan is just on the other side of the river.

IMG_6742

Today the roads were quiet.

IMG_6743

Patches of sun poked through the limbs of trees.

IMG_6744

This is everyones favorite climb on River Road. Mine included.

Coasting is fun don't let anyone tell you otherwise.

Early bird gets the worm. These suckers are just heading into Jersey.

IMG_6772

Tailwind. Yes please.

IMG_6773

Last time over this bridge. Looking forward to new roads.

Best.

bridge I woke up in the morning super excited to have the week off and enjoy the beautiful weather. Everything was carefully prepped the night before and I knew I wanted to put in some miles. As I approached the GWB bridge I was welcomed by a locked gate. Shit. I've seen posts of people keeping it rubber side down on the East Side of the river so I decided to give it a shot and see what I could find. What I didn't expect was to discover some of my favorite riding in New York. Hands down this ride trumped anything that 9W has to offer. Even the Bronx dished out 22% gradients and once I passed Tarrytown I had pedaled into a dream state where the water ran through thick growth and the roads resonated with stillness.

Wettest Commute Ever

I was one of the few crazies to commute to work today. NYC is getting hit hard but I just wasn't looking forward to standing on a subway. I hate the NYC subway. It's the worst. More about that later. IMG_5938

Today I learned that my backpack isn't waterproof.

IMG_5971

The Rapha Overmitts work great in the rain.

IMG_5973

Pro tip. Turn on the Panorama function on your iphone to take rad glitchy photos like this one.

IMG_5986

Thinking about how it's too late to turnaround.

IMG_5988

Pain face. Literally the rain was hurting my face.
