Gateway Green: Portland's First Mountain Bike Park!

I moved to Portland in search of a cycling mecca but it didn't take long to realize that there was no infrastructure for off road cycling in the city limits. Over 150 miles of trail in Portland but basically none of it is legal on bikes. So what do we do? We get in our cars and drive 30-60 miles to mountain bike. Sadly it's one of the first things you learn after moving to Portland.

With the addition of Portland's first mountain bike park at the Gateway Green that will all change. Saturday was the grand opening of the Dirt Lab at Gateway Green. 3 Miles of single track, a skills course and a pretty killer jump line. The best part of it all is that I can pedal to it from my house in about 20 minutes. Stoked!

During the grand opening it quickly became clear that this space will be for people of all ages.

Gateway Green is one of Portland’s newest park acquisition - 25 acres of unused open space to be developed into a world-class recreation destination. Located in East Portland on the site of the former Rocky Butte Jail, Gateway Green will cultivate social equity, demonstrate innovative urban habitat restoration and energize local economic development.
What began as an inspired idea for bringing an underused piece of property to life shared with neighbors over coffee has grow to become the Gateway Green initiative, a project that has since involved dozens of community activists, state and city agencies, local businesses and nonprofits and other stakeholders. The park has been a work in process for more than ten years as a citizen-initiated project with economic, environmental and community building objectives.
