Thoughts on the Durston X-Dome+

I just got back from a four day trip in the Enchantments followed by two days in the Eagle Cap wilderness, and this was my first real test of the new Durston X-Dome+.

I’ll start by saying I much prefer the freestanding setup compared to my X-Mid Pro trekking pole tent. It’s just way easier. I love being able to move it around until I find the perfect spot, and that flexibility takes a lot of the stress out of setting up camp.

The X-Dome+ is also insanely roomy. Honestly, more space than I’ll ever need, which feels like a luxury in the backcountry. I haven’t had the chance to sit out a storm in it yet, but I’m curious to see how comfortable it’ll be hanging out for long stretches when the weather turns.

The weight is solid. It’s noticeably heavier than my X-Mid Pro, but that’s the tradeoff. When comfort is the goal I’ll grab the X-Dome+. When I want to keep things super light, the X-Mid still wins.

My version came with the short poles. The first set arrived defective, but Durston had replacements to me in about a week and a half. They’re clearly going through some growing pains, but the customer service was great and you can tell they care.
